This week, the Blanton opens “American Modernism from the Charles Butt Collection: From Edward Hopper to Alma Thomas” on March 8, running through August 2. It’s the first exhibition dedicated to the private collection of Charles Butt, the longtime H-E-B leader, described by the museum as a “businessman, philanthropist, and Texas native.” It brings together “over 80 rarely seen paintings and works on paper” by “icons of American modern art,” including “Edward Hopper… Georgia O’Keeffe, and Alma Thomas,” spanning “the late 19th century through the 1970s.”

Shared with the public “for the first time, Butt’s collection reflects his vision of American creativity, as well as his civic dedication and commitment to education.” Texas Monthly puts the personal stakes plainly—by sharing “his private trove of American modernism,” the famously elusive businessman “reveals, for the first time in decades, something about himself” — a collection devoted to “work that can still feel “unconventional and unexpected.”

Some Of The Masterpieces To Look For:

  • Bill Traylor, Man in Red Shirt with Hat, Umbrella, and Lunchbox (1939–42): A towering self-taught American artist whose stripped-down figures became essential to 20th-century American art history.
  • Marsden Hartley, New Mexico Recollections, No. 8 (1923): Hartley’s Southwest period turns place into bold, symbolic modernism.
  • Arthur G. Dove, Horses Plowing on a Hill (1927): Often cited among America’s earliest abstraction pioneers, Dove distills nature into pure rhythm and form.
  • Winslow Homer, Along the Road, Bahamas (1885): One of America’s great watercolorists; Homer’s late work captures light, weather, and daily life with unmatched clarity.

When: March 8 (opening day; 10AM–5PM) | Where: Blanton Museum of Art, Butler Gallery | Tickets: Here.
