Presented by First Light Books, Booker Prize winner George Saunders comes to Austin for a rare live conversation centered on his new novel Vigil, described as “a novel of conscience and transformation.” Across more than three decades, Saunders has built “a singular place in contemporary literature,” with work that blends satire, empathy, and moral inquiry.
In Vigil, Saunders turns to a story “set during the last night in the life of an oil executive guided toward his reckoning by an unearthly companion,” opening deeper questions about “responsibility, grace, and the cost of progress.” The evening promises a wide-ranging discussion on “the questions that shape his work” and “what it means to remain humane in an age of collapse.”
Meet George Saunders: Over the past three decades, Saunders has emerged as “one of the most original chroniclers of the American spirit,” known for writing that fuses “sharp wit, moral clarity, and imaginative daring.” His work spans short stories, essays, and novels published in The New Yorker and collected in books like Tenth of December and CivilWarLand in Bad Decline. He won the Booker Prize for Lincoln in the Bardo, and multiple works have been recognized among the New York Times’ “100 Best Books of the 21st Century.” Saunders is also a teacher, leading the creative writing program at Syracuse University, and continues to explore fiction that “illuminates the absurdities of modern life while revealing the tenderness that persists beneath them.”
Meet First Light Book Shop: First Light is “the epitome of the cozy, neighborhood bookstore,” an independently owned shop housed in a beautifully reimagined former post office in Hyde Park. Inside, you’ll find “colorful books adorning the walls, tables and shelves,” alongside a walk-up coffee bar, wine, and outdoor seating that invites you to linger. The space blends books, café culture, and events into what has quickly become “a cherished neighborhood hub,” inspired by European coffeehouses and designed for discovery. More than just a bookstore, as KUT reported, First Light is built around the idea that “books are powerful… [they] can sort of change the way you think, plant a new idea,” creating a place where people gather, explore, and stay awhile.
