The Backdrop

BookPeople has long been Austin’s literary hub, a space where readers, writers, and the book-curious gather. Whether you’re discovering a new author, attending a reading, or just soaking in the ambiance, the shop remains an independent bookstore worth celebrating.

  • Sleepless In Austin. Social Stimulus caught up with Savannah Olson, a bookseller at BookPeople who gave a sneak preview of B.K. Borison’s new romance book “First Time Caller.” Olson told us it’s “a delightful little rom-com” in the Sleepless in Seattle vein, complete with “a grumpy about love” radio host—and being published with “perfect timing for Valentine’s Day.” Olson would pair this book with one of the bookshop cafe’s V-day specialty beverage offerings: “an iced mocha with raspberry syrup.”
  • Swipe Right: If you like a little more mystery, any day of the year, book lovers can check out the shop’s “Blind Date with a Book”—“just tell us a bit about yourself—your reading preferences, a couple of books you’ve loved recently, etc.—and one of our savvy booksellers will hand-pick some surprise reads tailor-made for you”— so, Tinder, but lower odds of disappointment.
