What? Krysten Ritter comes to BookPeople
When and Where? Wednesday, March 26, at 6:00 P.M.
Tickets: here.
“She’s been Marvel’s unbreakable Jessica Jones, the ill-fated Jane Margolis in Breaking Bad, and the delightfully devious, morally flexible socialite of Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23,” writes Women.com’s Tasha Carlyle. “But now, Krysten Ritter takes on her darkest mystery yet — as a writer.”
This Wednesday, March 26, at 6:00 P.M., Ritter comes to BookPeople—“Austin’s literary hub”—to celebrate the release of her new novel, Retreat, which HarperCollins calls “a thriller about identity, obsession, and the dark secrets we hide from others—and ourselves.”
Retreat follows Liz Dawson, “a consummate con artist, slipping through rarefied social circles with a practiced ease.” Carlyle, from Women.com, describes the book as “a sleek, sun-drenched noir that sees identity as fluid as morality.” Los Angeles Times critic Malcolm Forbes calls it “the kind of thriller that invites binge-reading — slick, tight, and psychologically thorny ... Fans of Gone Girl, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and You will find plenty to savor here.”
For Ritter, the transition from actor to author came naturally. “Once I started writing, I fell so in love with the process — because it felt like all of my favorite parts of getting ready to play a great role,” she told PopSugar’s Chelsea Hassler. “I use real feelings, then of course embellish and create and imagine and riff, and it becomes something else… I always use myself and try to relate to real psychology, real physicality, real feelings… to make it real.”
That full-throttle energy has a name. “My sister came up with this phrase—Hard As A Motherf—er—when she was watching me train. She said, ‘Sissy, you go HAAM.’ I almost peed my pants, I laughed so hard. But it stuck,” Ritter told Women’s Health. “And now every time I go full throttle — with acting, or stunts, or writing — she texts me, ‘HAAM’ in all caps.”
