Austin Opera’s Serenata returns for its 15th annual gala, Ópera y Sazón, honoring the vibrant traditions of Latin American music and storytelling while raising crucial funds to support the company’s artistic and educational programs.

Austin Opera promises an unforgettable night:

  • “Bursting with the color and vitality” of Latin America
  • A “Latin-themed dinner curated by Executive Chef Elmar Prambs and Executive Sous Chef Abril Galindo”
  • Expert wine pairings—courtesy of Texas’s very own Twin Liquors
  • A live performance by soprano Liliana Guerrero—a rising star whose artistry and advocacy are shaping the future of opera.

Meet Liliana Guerrero—A Voice Elevating Opera’s Future:

  • A soprano known for her commanding voice and emotional depth, Guerrero has performed at leading opera houses and festivals across the country, with standout roles including Norina (Don Pasquale), Despina (Così fan tutte), and Curley’s Wife (Of Mice and Men). But her impact extends far beyond the stage.
  • Guerrero—an Assistant Professor of Voice at UT Austin’s Butler School of Music—is dedicated to expanding access to opera, particularly for young audiences and historically underrepresented communities. Through Austin Opera’s outreach programs, she introduces children to opera—helping them to see connections between classical vocal traditions and the sounds they know, from mariachi to gospel to folk music.
  • For Guerrero, this work is personal. Growing up in Michigan, she rarely saw opera singers who looked like her and initially assumed the art form wasn’t for her. Now, she’s on a mission to change that perception, proving that opera is for everyone and that its future is as diverse as its audiences.

Give Guerrero’s powerhouse pipes a listen:

Austin Opera’s bold new effort to expand the operatic canon and better reflect the experiences of Austin’s diverse communities.

Austin Opera launched the Opera ATX Residency for Latinx Creatives this season—a program designed to amplify Latinx voices in opera by commissioning and workshopping new works in both English and Spanish. The goal? To create operas that are as contemporary and relevant as the city of Austin itself.

It’s also expanding innovative Spanish-language opera through groundbreaking Cruzar la Cara de la Luna—the world’s first mariachi opera—marking a major step forward in embracing the rich musical traditions of Latin America within the operatic world.
